CHATEAU LE PUY, ‘EMILIEN’, BORDEAUX, FRANCE, 2018

Biodynamic

I had the chance to taste the 2018 vintage of Emilien from Chateau Le Puy recently.

A biodynamic blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, and Carmenere grown on chalk and clay soils with vines reaching 50 years old. The wine was aged in oak for 24 months with no chaptalisation used.

Le Puy is situated across 54 ha within the Cotes de Francs of Bordeaux. It has been owned by the Amoreau family since 1610, and their approach to sustainable winemaking both in the vineyards and winery have made them well liked amongst Sommeliers and wine enthusiasts alike.

The wine itself is deep in colour and character. Bags of plummy dark fruits, ripe blackcurrants, and a subtle influence of oak. On the palate, it's full and firm, yet I found the tannins to be quite grainy with a green tinge to the wine that might put some people of it. It was an interesting glass, however, that I would certainly get hold of if you've got the chance too.
